Cranial osteopathy, rooted in the biodynamic model of osteopathy in the cranial field, is a subtle yet profound approach to healing that works with the body’s innate rhythms and internal forces. This therapy, often also referred to as craniosacral therapy, focuses on the body's natural ability to regulate and heal itself, particularly through the movement of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). This fluid, which flows around the brain and spinal cord, acts like an internal ocean—its rhythmic waves echoing the primal forces we experienced during our embryonic development. These fluid movements remind us of the deep connection we have to our origins, and tapping into them can have a profoundly healing effect on the body and mind.
CSF nourishes and protects the brain and spinal cord, but it also plays a crucial role in the body’s communication systems. Cranial osteopathy aims to harmonise this flow, which practitioners often see as a direct connection to our body's vital life force. By tuning into these subtle waves, an osteopath will help us access our body's inherent wisdom, creating a space for deep relaxation and healing. This process often evokes the safety and wholeness of the womb, allowing our body to reset and release deep patterns of tension and trauma. If the experience of the womb was complicated, it provides an opportunity to reprogram it—creating a new matrix that aligns with our needs and frequency. For example, one of my patients, born into an aristocratic family, chose the archetype of a free-spirited, nonconformist artist as his mother — to see what it would be like to grow in a womb where he could freely become the bohemian artist of his dreams, rather than feeling trapped in a rigid family structure, destined to carry on a strict legacy with no room for creativity or the freedom to grow according to his own aspirations
The Three Diaphragms: Key to Structural and Energetic Balance
Cranial osteopathy places great emphasis on the balance of the body's three main diaphragms—the pelvic, thoracic, and cranial diaphragms. These diaphragms are not just physical structures, but vital energetic gateways through which the body's fluids and forces move. When these areas are in harmony, the body can function optimally; when they are restricted, imbalances can manifest as physical discomfort or emotional distress.
The pelvic diaphragm serves as the body’s energetic foundation, ensuring the smooth circulation of fluids and energy between the lower and upper parts of the body. Misalignment in this area can lead to lower back pain, digestive issues or pelvic tension. Releasing this area not only improves emotional grounding and physical stability, but also helps to release deeply accumulated tension, particularly in the psoas muscles.
The thoracic diaphragm, located beneath the lungs, is closely linked to breathing and also affects the circulatory and lymphatic systems. Tension in this region can cause breathing difficulties, anxiety and a feeling of tightness. Relaxing this area allows for deeper breathing, emotional calm, and the opening of the solar plexus, helping us reconnect with our life’s purpose.
The cranial diaphragm, surrounding the tissues at the base of the skull, plays a crucial role in the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid and overall brain function. Restrictions in this area can impact mental clarity, vision, mood and stress management. Balancing this area is vital for supporting the central nervous system, fostering inner peace, and restoring a harmonious connection between an often overloaded mind and the body.
Caring for Your Nervous System: The Power of Gentle Healing
In today’s fast-paced society, our nervous systems are under constant pressure, leaving many of us in a chronic state of stress and hypervigilance. Cranial osteopathy offers a way to access the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for rest, repair and relaxation. This gentle approach provides an opportunity to soothe and restore balance to the nervous system—the famous vagal reset.
When it comes to treating trauma—whether physical, emotional, or energetic—subtle therapies like cranial osteopathy often prove particularly effective. Trauma tends to embed itself deeply in the tissues and the nervous system, and the non-invasive nature of this therapy allows the body to release these blockages without feeling overwhelmed.
For those who have undergone intense psychotherapy, stressful life changes, transformational retreats or plant medicine ceremonies, cranial osteopathy offers a valuable tool for integration. The biodynamic model, which works with the body’s innate rhythms, supports the assimilation of these profound experiences. I often combine cranial osteopathy with trauma-informed psychotherapy, using techniques like somatic hypnotherapy to recreate healing scenarios that help the body repair and reclaim its own story.
Here are a few simple tips—ones I personally practice—to support your nervous system:
Mindful breathing: Slow, deep breaths activate the parasympathetic nervous system. Focus on lengthening your e-x-h-a-l-e to quickly soothe and calm your nervous system.
Conscious movement: Practices like yoga, Qi Gong, or even a peaceful walk in nature can help regulate the nervous system and release built-up tension. Personally, I’m a big fan of TRE (Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises), which I do daily to release stress from my body and prevent tension from becoming chronic.
Grounding techniques: Place your bare feet on the earth, or if that’s not possible, visualise them on the ground or in the sand. This practice, combined with the tree pose, is particularly powerful—especially if you imagine roots growing from the soles of your feet, diving deep into the Earth, drawing up the nutrients your body needs. The more gratitude you express to the Earth, the more she responds... :-)
Body-mind awareness: Journaling, meditating, and doing body scans allow you to become more aware of your body’s needs, recognise your limits, and live a life more in tune with what your gut instinct is telling you versus what your mind dictates.
As a cranial osteopath, I offer treatments that work with these subtle rhythms to support your body’s natural healing process. Whether you're looking to release trauma, integrate a profound healing experience, or simply restore balance in your nervous system, cranial osteopathy offers a gentle yet powerful approach.
